The Cage Parade
watercolor on paper · 2022
In my hometown, there's a tradition that people walk their birds in cages to let them be in nature while preventing them from fleeing away. Looking at the birds, I felt a surprising sense of resonance. Flying overseas, I've been finding the balance to be struck between security in my homeland and personal freedom in the US. If I open the cage of my heart, there are still thousands of little cages waiting to be opened. However, they are not being walked anymore. The air is fresh with the shining bright of their chirps as they fly away in different directions, toward the past, toward the present, and toward the future, pridefully parading.
